The World Bank has announced plans to invest over US$5.5 billion in the Middle East and Africa on solar energy projects.

The region has the potential to become one of the world’s foremost producers of renewable energy. This is already underway with Abu Dhabi being home to the Masdar project – the world’s first carbon neutral city – and to the IRENA Headquarters. IRENA is considering implementing projects to produce solar and wind energy in the UAE and the rest of the Gulf.

Saudi Arabia, slated to become a solar energy exporter is already building its first solar powered desalination plant.

Qatar is in serious talks with investors to build a US$1 billion solar power project.

Over 3,400 visitors to Middle East Electricity 2010 wanted to do business with companies providing new & renewable energy products and services.
