About the competition - Future Generation

Middle East Elecricity are pleased to announce the sixth edition of our Future Generation competition.

Future Generation highlights the potential of engineering students currently studying in the region. The competition provides an opportunity for students to display and present a project related to the 2019 theme noted below, in front of 20,000 regional visitors and over 1,500 international exhibitors of Middle East Electricity. The finalists will be displayed at the exhibition, which takes place from 5-7 March 2019 at the Dubai International Convention Centre.

2019 theme

Participants are invited to design and develop an intelligent solution around the 2019 theme:

Smart Energy Solutions: Improve Energy Efficiency

Over the next few decades making better use of energy resources will be just as important as finding alternative sources of supply. Energy efficiency policies have proven to be smart investments that create significant financial returns.

Students from all disciplines are invited to design and develop an intelligent solution around 2019 theme Smart Energy Solutions: Improve Energy Efficiency addressing Energy Efficiency. As a guide, projects should cover (but are not limited to) the following areas:

  • An idea or solution to combat excessive use of power
  • Show a cost-effective solution to reduce energy consumption
  • Produce a prototype and find a testing partner

Category

With ever increasing urbanisation, new ways to manage cities and reduce energy consumption are required to improve efficiency. The competition invites the “Future Generation” of the industry to submit their energy saving solutions.

AWARDS - Both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students are eligible.

Taking my research in wind turbines to the Future Generation Competition provided a platform for showcasing my work and meeting representatives from various companies who were interested in further development and investment.

The competition lasted three days and I had the opportunity to present and discuss my work with people from industry gaining their insights and developing my network as well as representing my research base, Heriot-Watt University and showcasing the work being done there. I really enjoyed the vibrant and positive atmosphere and especially being the winning recipient of the 'Official Judge's Choice - Postgraduate Award'! The award was a real motivational boost in progressing my research and taking it further through academia and industry. An enjoyable experience, well worth applying for.

Participating in this contest was a nice experience where I got the chance to meet students studying in universities in the middle east and people from Industry as well. I could see that many undergrads and graduate students who study electrical engineering got really inspired by our idea as it is an unconventional simple way of designing digital circuits that breaks the known circuit design techniques. In addition, I learned from the industry people who approached me how to sell our device instead of just
focusing on the technical details, which may not be of interest to many people.

Being a runner-up by people's choice meant a lot me as it means I was able to influence and convince some general audience/ students with our innovative idea. In addition, being the second one from KAUST to win one of the contest awards means a lot to our university and encourages more student to participate in the upcoming years.

I was also approached by different investors, but this technology is still in the research phase and will take some time to go to market.

“Future Generation Competition provided me a platform to showcase my idea related to energy saving solutions for Dubai Smart City. I really appreciate Middle East Electricity for giving such a wonderful opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to present their ideas and research outcomes. It was a well-organized event, a well-received event.”
